Erg Rowing Machine

An indoor rowing machine or a rower is a sort of machine which is used to help the user feel as if he is handling the real rowing machine in the water. It is a very challenging exercise as it works on almost all the major muscular parts of the body giving it a sculpted look. By ergometer, one generally refers to an indoor rowing machine. It is alternately known as erg rowing machine. These machines have been in use for quite a long time now. The first use of an indoor rowing machine can be dated back to almost a century. As time has progressed, the rowing machines have been adapted to simulate actual rowing very closely. With the rise in popularity of rowing, it was inevitable that one day, it would be enjoyed as a sport.

There are basically three types of machines available in the market currently- the hometrainers, the rowing ergometers like Concept2, Rowperfect and WaterRower and the actual dry land boats. The hometrainers are the cheapest and can be bought at a price less than 300 euros while the rowing ergometers are available ata price that generally goes up to 2000 euros. The speed of the rower or the time needed to travel 500 metres at the current pace is known as split. This is the standard measurement of rowing speed on an ergometer. The measurement doesn't correspond to the number of strokes that the rower makes because every rower applies different amounts of power.

Many high impact exercises affect the knees or the connective tissue of the lower body. The ergometer rowing adversely affects the lower back which is far more serious in nature. The rower needs to do the exercise with the proper techniques, exhaling during the drive and inhaling when recovering. This is very necessary if one wants to stay injury-free.

Non-rowers or new ones over emphasize the muscles in the upper part of the body while rowing but the experienced rowers know that it is the thigh muscles which would really help during rowing. The great sprinter Carl Lewis once gave a statement that rowing helped him to develop those strong legs which in order helped him to win so many races. After this, rowing became quite a popular sport for fitness freaks. Superstores started stocking up on erg rowing machines as a result, a trend which is seen even today.

Rowing has inspired many sporting competitions. People all over the world have woken up to the fact that rowing can be enjoyed as a sport along with giving the body some all round exercise. Erg rowing machine tests are used by sports rowing coaches to determine the fitness and skill levels of rowers for the selections in these competitions. They are asked to row a fixed distance of 500, 2000, 5000 or 6000 metres on the ergo within the fastest time possible. However, this is not the best way to select players as many factors influence the results. Technique plays a more important role than ergo. Generally, it is observed that the taller players take lesser time to row a particular distance. But like all things, this isn't without a disadvantage. The larger amount of body mass makes the boat to weigh into the water, making movement tougher. Coaches adjust the scores keeping all these points in mind.
